Assisted Stretching
Stretching is one if the most powerful, but often overlooked, ways to look after our bodies - helping to improve joint health and mobility, prevent against injury, improve performance, reduce muscle stiffness and pain, aid balance, and for stress relief and relaxation!
Assisted stretch sessions can help to work on any or all of these things, can target most areas of the body, and can be adapted to suit almost anyone.
I'll always sit down for a consultation with you first so that the treatment can be tailored exactly to you.
A gentle, passive stretch session might be the right choice for you, or you might benefit more from something more active, or adding in some resistance work..
You might have problem areas you'd like to focus on.
There might be some aspects of the treatment you're not sure about, or not keen on.
Or you might have a medical condition that means we need to make a few adjustments.
That's all absolutely fine - it's your session! So make sure you tell me exactly what you'd prefer.
Our aim will be to find the comfortable edge of your range of motion and then gently encourage the joint to ease.
It's really important to keep in mind that where that comfortable edge is will vary hugely from person to person - it's not about turning you into a contortionist!
I'll use a combination of different techniques to start getting some movement into your joints, and easing any troublesome areas.
This will often be a mix of compressions, mobilisations and stretches, and we can use a variety of different stretch techniques to maximise your range of motion and to help to strengthen your joints.
Passive stretching - is the most relaxing and gentle. You don't need to do anything at all - just relax! I'll take you into each stretch and we'll stay there for up to a minute, letting your muscles slowly soften. This is usually the most popular choice, and is perfect if you want to relax. It's also the best choice to gently add some movement in following an injury, or if you have a long term condition or pain.
PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) - is a brilliant way to start to strengthen the muscles around the joints. As we move into each stretch I'll ask you to push back against me a little and then release, moving slightly deeper into the stretch each time. This is the perfect way to start building some strength back up and working into a deeper range of motion after the initial healing period for minor sprains and strains or muscular tension. PNF is also a good choice for hypermobile clients to build strength without overstretching joints.
AIS (Active Isolated Stretching) - is the most active type of stretching, a bit of a mini workout! With this technique you'll be taking yourself into each stretch over and over again, as I help guide you deeper with each movement. This is an amazing technique for more active clients as part of a training regime to keep joints mobile and strong. It’s also a great progression in later stages of recovery from injury.
I can’t stress enough that the aim is always to work within your comfort zone to get you completely relaxed and pain free.
I know that often you may be coming to me in pain and anxious about overloading your joint, but this is not a ‘no pain, no gain’ approach!
As always, it's all about you and your preferences, and the most effective way of releasing tension and easing pain is to make you comfortable!
As with any treatment, it's often worthwhile to have a two or three sessions reasonably close together to deal with existing, stubborn problems, and then regular treatments can help prevent them from coming back.
But, clients report feeling, looser, taller, pain free, and extremely relaxed after even just one session.
